BENIN CITY FINAL FORM (VIDEO)

For anyone who’s been following Benin City’s sonic breadcrumbs - a trail that leads you up to an inconspicuous door off a London side-street that opens up into an underground club - you’ll know that much of their music laments over the loss of such nighttime gems. Recalling the video for ‘All Smoke, No Fire’, the outlook isn’t promising, but that is just one side of the story. Turning their back on bad premonitions, Benin City embrace the club culture that we do have right now, here in the present. As vocalist and one-third of the group Joshua Idehen tells us: "we wanted our next video to celebrate the mainstream and alternative scenes still thriving in London. Working with George Bushaway, we crafted a narrative of two clubbers working up the courage to lose themselves in three very different dancefloors: Lindy hopping with Swing Patrol in Holborn, Jungle/Garage raving in Fire down Vauxhall, and a soca night at Ruby Blue, Leicester Square.” The video for ‘Final Form’ follows two friends as they explore, dance, drink, smoke, laugh, wonder “what am I doing here?” and throw themselves into new environments on a night out in London. Our view switches between a mainstream club and a retro couples dancehall, the present and the past alongside each other, with hope for the future to be found somewhere in between the two. As long as there’s people who want a club culture, there will always be one. -HT
